Blue is the Warmest Colour/La vie d'Adèle (FR, 2013)

Arrived at QFT to discover my membership had lapsed over 3 months ago.

Grand prize winner at this year's Cannes Film Festival, it is a very good film, but maybe not as brilliant as the ratings would indicate.

The film tracks the sometimes intense relationship between two young women in a small French city. Long and emotionally involving, there's a slight swerve in Adele's circumstances; one minute she's a secondary school pupil, facing down inquisitive homophobic gossip; next she's a primary school teacher. The ending is ambiguous and a little disappointing. Unadapted audiences could be shocked by some of the subject matter.

A welcome return not just to QFT but also to French film. It's been too long, hope we will meet soon again.
